Chiropractic Care
There are many ignorant misconceptions about chiropractors and chiropractic care. Sadly, there is a stigma that chiropractic care is unsafe and ineffective. It comes down to the practitioner, just like other jobs come down to the proficiency of that particular plumber, teacher, lawyer or anybody else in their respective professions. In the hands of a skilled and trained physician (Jeff is both highly-skilled and well-trained), chiropractic is well-documented to be completely safe and extremely effective regarding disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially back and neck pain. Dr. Scarella utilizes many techniques to restore the structural integrity of the spine and has seen great results with patients that have faith in his care. Along with many adjustment techniques, he uses a specialized flexion/distraction table to loosen up the musculature around the spine and alleviate tension. He also may use the Activator Technique when appropriate.
Active Release Techniques®
Active Release Techniques are the "gold standard" in myofascial release. A.R.T is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with A.R.T. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles. Overused muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:
acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)
Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.
Graston Technique®
One unique set of tools that we use in our clinic are Graston tools. Graston Technique is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation. Graston Technique is an interdisciplinary treatment used by more than 9,000 clinicians worldwide that:
provides improved diagnostic treatment
decreases overall time of treatment
fosters faster rehabilitation/recovery
reduces the need for anti-inflammatory medication
resolves chronic conditions thought to be permanent

Low Level Laser Therapy (Cold Laser)
Cold laser is another unique tool we utilize in our clinic to maximize the benefits for our patients. On a basic level, the laser emits a visible coherent light that is applied to the affected area. Bundles of light energy pass through the dermal layers and are received within the cell membrane by specific energy photo acceptors. The increase in intra-cellular energy results in altered cell membrane permeability, and physiological changes occur through an enzyme cascade to affect several biological processes. Within the injured musculoskeletal tissue, low-level laser light initiates increased microcirculation and enhanced tissue regeneration. The overall effects are decreased pain and inflammation, and increased range of motion. Plus, lasers are cool.
Modalities
We also utilize many other Physical Therapy modalities, including:
Electric Stimulation- Uses an electrical current to cause a single muscle or a group of muscles to contract. By placing electrodes on the skin in various locations we can recruit the appropriate muscle fibers. Contracting the muscle via electrical stimulation helps strengthen the affected muscle. We can change the current setting to allow for a forceful or gentle muscle contraction. Along with increasing muscle strength, the contraction of the muscle also promotes blood supply to the area that assists in healing.
Ultrasound- Transmits sound waves to the surrounding tissue and vasculature. They penetrate the muscles to cause deep tissue/muscle warming. This promotes tissue relaxation and therefore is useful in treating muscle tightness and spasms. The warming effect of the sound waves also cause vessel vasodilation and increase circulation to the area that assists in healing. We can also adjust the frequency on the machine to use waves that will decrease inflammation.
Hot/Cold Therapy- Management with ice is the first line of treatment in acute injury. The cold temperature causes vasoconstriction of the blood vessels in the area. This decreases the inflammation in the area. By decreasing inflammation, pain and swelling are decreased. This in turn decreases pain. Heat on the other hand relaxes tight muscles causing tissues to relax. This decreases pain caused by muscle tension or spasms. It also causes vasodilation of the blood vessels which increases circulation to the area. Patients with muscle strains, spasms, or arthritis often benefit from treatment with heat.
Kinesio Tape- The Kinesio Taping Method is designed to facilitate the body's natural healing process while allowing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body's range of motion. It is used to successfully treat a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and medical conditions. The tape has a texture and elasticity very close to living human skin in response to limitations with rigid sports taping methods. Kinesio Tape re-educates the neuromuscular system, reduces pain and promotes improved circulation and healing.
Massage Therapy
Massage is one of the oldest healing arts and is excellent as a supplement to chiropractic care. As an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs, massage therapy has proven beneficial for many chronic conditions, including low back pain, arthritis, bursitis, fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, immunity suppression, infertility, smoking cessation, depression, and more. And, as many millions will attest, massage also helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living that can lead to disease and illness.
