Description:

Welcome to Chiropractic Center of Farmington, Dr. Peter Meadow has had the privilege of serving the Farmington Valley area for nearly 25 years. He strongly believes that chiropractic manipulations are the best way to treat most back conditions. This includes not only low back and mid-back pain, but also headaches, arm pain, and leg pain - which generally have their source in spinal dysfunction.

Why Chiropractic?

Most people - orthopaedic surgeons included - believe that back pain is caused by problems with the muscles. It is certainly true that muscle spasms and strains play a role in back pain, but they are rarely the source of the problem. You can mask the pain associated with muscular injury with analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications, but you cannot treat the mechanical source of back pain with chemicals.

While the human body is far more complex than a machine, it tends to break down in the same places as any machine - at the moving parts. The spinal joints allow for motion between the vertebrae. When the mobility of a joint is compromised, either by injury or developmental imbalances, the result is pain in the joint itself, and in the associated muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Chiropractic treatment is designed to correct the mechanical source of back pain by restoring proper function to the joints.

This is accomplished through manipulation of the joints - spinal manipulation or “adjustment”. This simple procedure is not usually painful, and few risks are associated with it (particularly as compared to the gastrointestinal pain, kidney trouble, fatigue and chemical dependancy associated with drug therapy for the same conditions). Patients generally find significant relief from pain in 3 - 6 treatments.

Massage, Nutrition, Exercise

We have four wonderful massage therapists in the office, since the muscular component of back pain must also be addressed. You may be sure that a good massage is a far better way to treat muscular pain than muscle-relaxants and pain-killers could ever be. It is also generally far better than the machine oriented physical therapy so prevalent within the medical model. The combination of massage and chiropractic is the best way to treat most back pain.

In the long range, nothing is better for most back problems than exercise. Many patients ask me ‘How can I strengthen my back?’ While poorly toned muscles often contribute to a back problem, loss of mobility and tight muscles are generally more to blame. For this reason, stretching is generally more important than toning. Dr. Meadow will work with you to modify your existing activities and will help you develop a simple routine to increase your flexibility and relax your muscles.
